On May 10, 2016 Agora entered the sustainable, locally grown arena in a big way. Partnering with Ian Brown Landscaping, we have purchased and installed a super high production hydroponic growing system housed in a retrofitted shipping container. These are the same containers you find on ships crossing the world's oceans delivering goods to hundreds of countries. A company called Freight Farms www.freightfarms.com located on Summer St. in Boston, takes used containers and rebuilds them into these fantastic gardening systems. These LGMs (Leafy Green Machines) can grow a variety of herbs and leafy vegetables in a contained environment that produces clean healthy crops 365 days a year. At our new site in Walpole, MA we have the ability to grow approximately 5,000 mini heads of lettuce every seven weeks! Yesterday we did our first planting of 600 tiny certified organic lettuce seeds and 200 organic seeds of Red Russian kale. These seeds come to us from Johnny's Selected Seed Co. in Winslow, ME. As you can see from the photo above, we grow everything from seed in an extremely clean and secure environment. We are fanatics when it comes to cleanliness...maybe Chipoltles should call us! In the coming weeks we will begin planting many different herb and vegetable varieties. Many restaurants in the Dedham, Walpole, Westwood area are already eagerly awaiting our first harvest which is due in July. The great thing is that we will be delivering fresh produce all year long, even in the dead of winter when temperatures outside are dipping below zero! This is exciting new technology and Agora Gardens and Ian Brown Landscaping are really happy to be a part of it. Please feel free to call us at 781-249-9426 if you would like to visit the facility and Ian or David would be happy to show you around!
